You may think it strange that the NZTBA celebrates the Australian Racing Hall of Fame. But when you consider the strong Kiwi connections many of the past, present and likely future inductees have, it's not strange at all.
Six of the first ten equine inductees were bred in New Zealand: Carbine, Phar Lap, Tulloch, Rising Fast, Might And Power and Sunline. And New Zealand-born Maurice McCarten was among the five trainers inducted in 2002. He won the Sydney premiership four times and trained champions Todman and Wenona Girl, who are both 2003 Hall Of Fame nominees.
Four Kiwi-bred horses will also be considered this year: Galilee, Let's Elope, Octagonal and Super Impose. Of the other nominees Gloaming was bred in Australia, but owned by George Greenwood and trained by Dick Mason in Christchurch, and champion Victorian trainer Lou Robertsonwas born here.
Five horses, three trainers and two jockeys, chosen from a total of forty nominations, will be admitted this year. In addition, two people chosen from a list considered, but not made public by the judges will be inducted as associates. The judging panel is: Bryan Martin (chairman), Ray Thomas, Ron Taylor, Bill Whittaker, Rod Johnson, Bob Charley, Norman Carlyon, Graham McNiece, Les Carlyon and Pat Parker.
The new members of the Hall Of Fame will be announced at a gala dinner in Adelaide on Thursday 15 May, 2003.
