A yearling parade at a handsomely appointed thoroughbred stud has to be one of life's better assignments on a hot Waikato summer afternoon.
On Monday John and Colleen Thompson hosted clients, guests and media at Rich Hill Stud near Matamata and presented their 40 yearlings for Karaka 2006. As the home of New Zealand's current leading sire Pentire, last year's leading freshman sire in Europe Bertolini and exciting new sire Jungle Pocket Rich Hill has every right to feel confident going into this year's sales series.
And their draft is a credit to Rich Hill's yearling manager Donovan Shadwell and his team. In particular, the line-up of strong, mature yearlings by Jungle Pocket reminded us that their sire was a Group 3-winning two-year-old, as well as a Japan Derby and Cup-winning three-year-old. As John Thompson pointed out, several have a Star Kingdom look about them. The Australian supersire does appear in Jungle Pocket's pedigree, but not until the fifth generation.
Standouts at the parade included:
Premier Sale
Lot 79 - Jungle Pocket-Special Jade colt
Lot 150 - Rock of Gibraltar-What Can I Say filly
Lot 322 – Jungle Pocket-Forfar colt
Lot 356 – Jungle Pocket-Hello Dolly filly
Select Sale
Lot 565 – Pentire-Sheila Cheval colt
Lot 697 – Bertolini-All About Money colt
Lot 741 – Bertolini-Camallino Star filly
Festival Sale
Lot 1445 – Jungle Pocket-Mesabi filly
Guests at the parade included trainers Richard Yuill, Trevor & Stephen McKee, Stephen Autridge and Moira Murdoch, as well as owners and breeders Peter Walker, Alistair Sutherland, Vicki & Wayne Pike and, visiting from Hawke's Bay, Xcellent's breeder Graeme Gimblett. He was pleased to inspect Xcellent's 2005 brother, and their dam Excelo, who is back in foal to Pentire.
Rich Hill Stud sold 42 yearlings at New Zealand and Australian sales last year, averaging almost $69,000. Their top price in 2005 was $250,000, paid at the New Zealand Premier sale for the Giant's Causeway-Secret Truth filly.
