The NZB Insurance Pearl Series got off to an auspicious start at Avondale today when the first race to be run under the new fillies' incentive scheme was won by Way In.
The daughter of first season sire Thewayyouare was one of three Pearl Series enrolled runners in the seven-horse field for the NZB Insurance Pearl Series 2YO Bonus. Prepared by Shaune Ritchie and ridden by Sam Spratt, Way In took full advantage of her inside draw to share the early pace and then establish a break on her rivals which she never looked like surrendering.
At the line she was two lengths clear of Daytime Robbery, who just shaded previous start Wanganui debut winner Kschessinska, another enrolled in the Pearl Series.
Way In was selected by Ritchie from Bradbury Park's Select draft at the last National Yearling Sale, paying $52,500 for her on behalf of a partnership that includes Peter Mitchell. He of course raced the champion galloper Bonecrusher, with whom Ritchie was so closely associated as a teenager, and Way In races in the same chocolate and cream colours.
The speedy filly is just the second New Zealand runner by Windsor Park Stud shuttle sire Thewayyouare, a Group One-winning two-year-old by Kingmambo whose slightly older first crop of European two-year-olds has already produced five winners.
On top of her share of the $7,000 stake for today's race, Way In earned her connections an $8,000 Pearl bonus, with $7,000 paid to her owners, $700 to her trainer and $300 to the person responsible for enrolling her in the series.
The next race in the NZB Insurance Pearl Series is scheduled for Thursday's Tauherenikau meeting. Nominations have been left open after only six two-year-olds were entered this morning, with just one of them Pearl Series enrolled.
The first South Island race in the series is scheduled for October 26 at Riccarton.
