Flavigny wins at Wairarapa 8/2/16

The team at Windsor Park took great delight in the recent success of Flavigny (Mastercraftsman[IRE]-Sharp Point[USA]), when she won the Listed Wairarapa Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes.
"It was a big thrill and nice to see her win a black type race as she has had a few little issues, including a couple of wind operations earlier in her career," enthused Windsor Park General Manager Steve Till.
"Originally we owned the mare with Helen-Gaye and Graham Bax, and Flavigny was bred by that partnership, however she had issues as a yearling, then needed the first wind operation, so by the time she needed the second wind operation, Graham decided to gift her to us".
"She was a great big strapping girl and we were happy to end up with her as she is from a great European family. We had a vested interest in making a racehorse out of her. We now own her dam Sharp Point outright after the Bax's decided to restructure their broodmare band last year."
A lightly raced four-year-old mare Flavigny has now won four races, she won a maiden as a three-year-old and the other three wins have been this season, kicking off with a fresh up win over 1200 metres in October.
"It was great to see her step up, the feedback from her trainers Mike Moroney and Chad Ormsby was that she was talented, so we put her in the Auckland Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes in late November. She ran a great race in that behind Soriano, but that indicated she was up to a good level it was just a matter of finding the right spot".
"We thought after she won at Ellerslie over Christmas that it was worth a shot at the Group Three Anniversary and she fought on strongly for fourth on a bad track. On that run the fillies and mares at Tauherenikau over 1600 again seemed ideal, that track suits swoopers, they can finish over the top in the straight on that track."
"Like most of the Mastercraftsman's she will only get better with time, so it's wonderful to have a black type mare from this great family".
"Bruce Perry identified the mare and bought her for us she is from a top European family, that is a target for International buyers, it's a family that is highly commercial and well sought after. She was a good entry for us into that family".
Flavigny is the fourth foal and second winner of the Point Given (USA) mare Sharp Point, a daughter of the stakes winning mare Jibe(USA). Sharp Point has a filly foal at foot by Guillotine and is in foal to Shamexpress.
Jibe by Danzig (USA), won the two races including the Listed Newbury Stakes, she was second in the Group One Ascot Fillies Mile, and third in the Group Three Nell Gwynne Stakes at Newmarket. She is out of Slightly Dangerous(USA) who won the Group Three Fred Darling Stakes and the Listed Duke of Edinburgh Stakes at Ascot and ran second in the Group One English Oaks.
Slightly Dangerous is the dam of 13 foals, 10 of which are winners including the dual English and Irish Derby winner and successful sire Commander in Chief (GB), by Dancing Brave(USA), and Warning(GB),(ex Known Fact[USA]) the English Champion two and three-year-old and successful sire. Dushyantor(GB) by Sadler's Wells(USA) a stakes winner of five races and also went to stud, was another son of Slightly Dangerous, while Jibe's full sister Yashmak won four races including the Group One Belmont Flower Bowl Handicap, she left a Group One winner in France Full Mast.
Another daughter, Shirley Valentine, was stakes placed and left the Danehill(USA) stakes winner and sire Multiplex and another stakes winner in Memorise (by Lyphard [USA]).
Slightly Dangerous was out of Where You Lead by Raise A Native, who won the Musidora Stakes, emulating her mother the champion two and three-year-old racehorse Noblesse(GB) who also won the Oaks. Where You Lead also left the French stakes winner I Will Follow (USA), by Herbager[FR], who went on to become the dam of Rainbow Quest (USA).
"In this day and age if you can, you have to have the progeny from these families, especially with the buying bench that our sales are now attracting, we need those families," concluded Till, "we are quite excited about her future prospects and there are a couple of nice black type mares races left this autumn that we may have a crack at now."
