Riley’s achievement highlights a pathway into thoroughbred breeding
Cambridge Stud’s Riley Bennett was recognised on Monday morning with the presentation of his Level 3 Equine Breeding qualification, marking an important milestone in his industry career.
His achievement highlights the opportunity available to stud staff to build their knowledge, gain a recognised NZQA qualification and put their learning into practice every day.
The 12-month course is free for both students and studs, with learning structured around the breeding season. From preparing mares for service and caring for mares and foals to working with yearlings, coursework aligns with the practical tasks students undertake on farm.
Students receive support from a visiting tutor and an appointed on-farm mentor. Studs play an important role by encouraging progress, providing learning opportunities and releasing students for a two-day winter block course and occasional seminars.
For those looking to progress in the thoroughbred industry, Level 3 provides a valuable foundation. It can open doors to greater responsibility on farm, further study and opportunities such as the Sunline Trust and Irish National Stud scholarships. Graduates can also advance to the two-year Level 4 qualification as they work towards more senior stud roles.
With one intake each winter, around May, the course offers a practical, supported pathway to turn hands-on experience into a recognised qualification and build a career in equine breeding.
Congratulations to Riley and Cambridge Stud on this achievement.
