Henrietta, Duchess of Bedford and Brighthill Farm are saddened to report the passing of Savile Row.
The Group One-performed son of Makfi had looked set for a promising season when paraded at last weekend’s Gavelhouse Stallion Parade, but sadly this was not to be for the 13-year-old sire.
“He looked the picture of health on Saturday, but unfortunately when we went to his paddock on Monday morning, he had succumbed to a heart attack,” Brighthill Farm’s Nick King said.
“This is particularly sad for Henrietta, who had a lot of faith in the horse. Since purchasing him in June, she had wanted to give him every opportunity at stud and she was achieving just that, with a number of mares booked in at the time of his passing.”
From limited opportunities, Savile Row sired 14 winners from 25 runners, including stakes-placed fillies She Suits Herself and Perfectly Suited, along with Group Two fourth-placegetter Suit Yourself.
Bred and raced by the late Kevin Hickman, Savile Row was out of the winning Daylami mare Fleece and was a full brother to Group Two winner Needle And Thread, the dam of talented Sword of State juvenile Warwoven.
Trained by the late Michael Moroney and Pam Gerard, Savile Row was three times runner-up at Group One level, placing in the Herbie Dyke Stakes (2000m), New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m) and Levin Classic (1600m).
A three-time winner, Savile Row won the Listed Hallmark Stud Handicap (1200m) at Ellerslie as a four-year-old, having also won over 1200m at three and on debut as a two-year-old.
