NZ-bred runners in Easter features at Randwick

Sixteen New Zealand-breds line up in Group or Listed Stakes races at Royal Randwick
this Easter Saturday, traditionally one of the most important racedays of the
Australasian season.

Kiwi-breds are most strongly represented in the Australian Derby and the Chairman's
Handicap, two races in which they have an outstanding record. Ten of the last 20
Derby winners were bred here, while 13 of the past 20 Chairman's winners have carried
the (NZ) suffix.

This year is significant as the 20th anniversary of one of the very best Derby winners
in its 146-year history, the magnificent Bonecrusher, bred in New Zealand by Bill
Punch
, trained by Frank Ritchie and ridden by Gary Stewart for owner Peter Mitchell.

Sir Patrick & Lady Hogan figure as the breeders of four runners on the card: Dane
Tristalight
(whom they also race), Zabeat, Fooram and Cross Bar, and Cambridge Stud's super-sire Sir Tristram appears in the immediate pedigrees of all of them. The Hogans have already bred three Australian Derby winners, Tristarc (1985), Octagonal (1996) and Don Eduardo (2002), but do not have a runner in that race this year. Instead, their attention will be focussed on their three representatives in the Chairman's Handicap, a race that has so far eluded them. They are part of a strong group of five Kiwi-bred horses, led by Auckland Cup runner-up Zabeat, in that field.

De Beers
, bred by Peter & Philip Vela and managed by Rob McAnulty for a largely
New Zealand-based syndicate, and Waikato Stud's brilliant homebred sprinter Glamour Puss offer us the best chance of Group One success on Saturday. De Beers comes into the Derby after winning the Rosehill Guineas G1, while Glamour Puss is hoping to add a
Sydney Group One sprint to her two Group victories at the Melbourne Cup Carnival in
the spring.
