Last Saturday's Arrowfield Stud Stakes winner Sixty Seconds (Centaine) is the second Group One winner this season from a Sound Reason mare. The other is New Zealand 1000 Guineas & Bayer Classic winner Final Destination and she too is by a Waikato Stud sire, O'Reilly.
Another current season performer from a Sound Reason mare, Pledge (by Paramount Lodge's young sire Mellifont), added a third stakes race to her record with victory in the Ashburton RC New Zealand Bloodstock Leasing S. LR on Friday 22 March.
Sound Reason (Bold Reason-New Tune by New Providence) was bred in Canada where he won stakes races from five furlongs to a mile-and-a-quarter at two, three and four, including the Woodbine Queen's Plate G1 at three.
He was imported by a partnership to stand at Riddlesworth Stud, Masterton in 1979. From 13 crops he left 42 stakeswinners, among them six Group One winners: stayers Soundoration and Senator, champion New Zealand two-year-old Moonshine, classic fillies Candide and Cologne and Australian miler Sound Horizon.
That he could leave top-class horses across a wide range of aptitudes made Sound Reason a remarkably valuable sire although, like many other good New Zealand stallions of the 1980's, he was always over-shadowed in the wider public perception by Sir Tristram.
His status as a "good name to have in a pedigree" has only grown with time and his daughters have now left 31 stakeswinners, including eight Group One winners: Derby winner So Casual, 1000 Guineas and Oaks winner Tartan Tights, Final Destination (New Zealand), St Covet, Yelgun Dawn, Lord Revenir, Sixty Seconds (Australia) and Billion Win (Hong Kong).
Mares by Sound Reason have left eight other stakeswinners to Centaine, among them Sixty Seconds' G3-winning sister Spottswoode and the Group 2 winners Fleur De Chine, Perfect World and Ultimate Aim.
Sound Reason died in December 1992.
