Guy Sargent was elected chairman of New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing on Friday, succeeding retiring chairman Murray Acklin. Five of the nine directors voted for him ahead of Southern Region director Brian Kinley.
Guy Sargent, 46, comes from a Manawatu farming background, more than fifteen years' experience in various farming businesses and a strong base of participation in New Zealand racing as an owner and administrator.
From 1985 until 1995 he worked with Dalstud, the first New Zealand business to do embryo transplants in cattle, sheep and deer. Guy was New Zealand manager of Wrightson's livestock division for three years, until 1998, and then established a farming software company which he sold two years ago. He is now the executive director of the beef brand AngusPure and has interests in a software systems company and a restaurant.
Guy has been president of the Manawatu Racing Club since 1999 and has raced approximately 80 horses over a period of twenty years. They include the stakeswinners Whey To Go and The Big Bopper, both trained by his brother John, now based at Matamata after some years in Malaysia.
Guy is married to Melanie, a solicitor in Palmerston North, and they have two children, Emma, 15, and Sam, 13. He has been a member of the NZTR board since 2001 and is joined on the board this year by Keith Neylon who almost defeated Murray Acklin two years ago.
Keith, 56, is a Southland businessman who shares with Guy Sargent a track record of innovation and success in primary industries, experience in racing club administration and substantial participation as a racehorse owner.
The other new member of the NZTR board is former Avondale Jockey Club president Ivan Sapich.
