Saturday's Waikato Guineas 1600m G3 win by Philamor (Generous-Plaid by Morcon; bred and raced by the Archer Corporation Ltd) was about much more than the prizemoney.
At Glenmorgan Farm Brett Jenkins was "one very happy studmaster" because Philamor is the first New Zealand-bred stakeswinner by champion racehorse Generous, already proven in Europe and North America. Glenmorgan initially shuttled Generous from Japan, then made the decision to purchase him when the JBBA indicated it was willing to sell him. Twenty-six members of his 67-strong first southern hemisphere crop have made it to the races and nine of them have won a total of 12 races.
Philamor bears a strong physical resemblance to Generous and gallops with a similarly powerful, raking action that helped him to see off the late and determined challenges of placegetters Waitoki Dream (Pentire) who missed the start by five lengths, and Mount Street (Kilimanjaro). The medium-sized chestnut gelding has a very great deal to do to approach, much less match his sire's class, but trainer Tony Cole has been saying for some time now that he is a Derby horse.
The Archer Corporation is headed by owner-breeders Robin and Muriel Archer of Christchurch, with their daughters Susan Archer, Auckland, and Kate Agnew, Christchurch, and their son Les who works for Cullen Investments and is a director of Westbury Stud. Philamor is a member of the Honey Carlyle family with which the Archers have worked for 22 years, since their 1981 purchase of McAngus (Alvaro-Honey Carlyle).
Honey Carlyle is now the dam, grand-dam or second dam of five Group winners, by five different stallions:

Robin and Muriel Archer purchased Honey Carlyle from Phil Bayly (owner-breeder of G1 Blue Denim) in 1987 and bred just two foals from her before she died in 1990: a filly by Pompeii Court who was sold to Waikato Stud but died after an accident; and the 1988 filly Plaid, winner of three races from the Christchurch stable of Pam Robson.
Honey Carlyle herself won seven races and was a fourth-generation descendant of Fortune's Wheel, the first foal of Night Raid and Entreaty, born in 1925. A year later the same mating left the incomparable Phar Lap.
