At last, New Zealand thoroughbred owners can look forward with confidence to better rewards.
Legislative changes initiated by the Minister for Racing, Winston Peters earlier this year have reduced the totalisator duty from a headline rate of 20% to 4% of gambling profits. The means that from 1 August the industry will retain more of the money it earns and NZ Thoroughbred Racing is making sure that most of it is directed towards prizemoney.
So it's a great time to become a racehorse owner. But there's a catch. The New Zealand foal crop has declined from around 5,000 in 2002 to an estimated 4,300 foals this coming season and it's going to take a few years for that number to increase.
Which means that finding a horse to race for that better prizemoney may become a little more difficult, as buyers compete for available yearlings and two-year-olds in the sale-ring.
However, there's another source prospective owners can tap into. While our members are busy planning their 2006 matings to meet future demand, they can offer their current racing prospects for lease or sale, some of them ready to go straight into training, in the NZTBA's online Sale and Lease catalogue.

New listings by NZTBA members are always welcome and business has been especially brisk since the demise of the Friday Flash and its popular classified ad pages.
