The early spring racing was dominated by a very smart young unbeaten colt by O'Reilly in Sacred Falls, and the summer looks like it will be dominated by another unbeaten son of that fabulous progenitor Mosse (O'Reilly – Golden Sparkle).
From five starts Mosse has won five races with the most recent being the group three The Aussie Butcher Concorde Handicap over 1200 metres, and the manner in which he won that race indicates that there is a lot more to come from this lightly raced four-year-old.
With about 700 metres to run in the Concorde he was in last place some 15 lengths away from the leading bunch. On the turn he was second to last 12 lengths away and from there he began to weave his way through the field. Even with 100 to run he was three lengths off the leaders when he pinned his ears back and pounced to gather them in and win by a long neck.
His trainer John Bell, who part-owns the horse with Benedict Sin, has indicated that he will now contest the prestigious group one sprinting events the Sistema Railway Stakes at Ellerslie on New Year's Day and the JR & N Berkett Handicap at Trentham in mid-January.
Mosse commenced racing in April with a win at Counties over 1200 metres. Bell then put the gelding aside for the winter and produced him in early September to win a 1000 metre race at Taupo. From that time his races have been spaced around four to five weeks apart with two wins through the grades at Ellerslie before winning the Concorde with a lightweight of 53.5kilograms.
Mosse is the fifth foal of the Gold Brose (AUS) mare Golden Sparkle, and was bred by Lesley and Russell Warwick's Marriott Trust. Golden Sparkle is the fifth foal of Classy Twiggy, and is a full sister to Parfore and Nishaani. Parfore is the dam of the sensational Singaporean horse Super Easy – who won 13 races on end earlier this year – along with the Australian stakes winners Tiger Tees (Dubawi [IRE]) and Our Lukas (Generous [IRE]). Nishaani on the other hand has left the champion two-year-old filly Il Quello Veloce (Captain Rio [GB]) and Donna Cattiva (Captain Rio [GB]), a stakes winner at two last season.
"He's a very, very good horse," enthused Russell Warwick, General Manager of Westbury Stud, "Lesley and I are fortunate enough to have been associated with some very good horses over the years we have been breeding like Buzz Lightyear and Il Quello Veloce but none have won the way he has and been unbeaten all the way through like he has.
"It's quite scary the audacity with which he wins his races. He flattens his ears down and weaves his way through the field and it is almost as though he then looks around and says that's done, what's next?"
"It's quite ironic how that family has gone whoosh in the last two years. It's amazing how it has gone from a very average family to absolutely piping hot at the moment. It just goes to show if you breed enough horses you are bound to get a good one."
Golden Sparkle was bred by Fencourt Pty Limited with whom Warwick was associated when Gold Brose stood at Westbury Farm in Cambridge. She was sold by Westbury Stud at the 2001 Premier Sale for $100,000 and was purchased by Michael Stedman Bloodstock. She didn't race due to bone chips and went to stud in 2003. She went through the 2008 National Broodmare Sale in foal to O'Reilly and was knocked down for $42,500.

"She came here after the sale, as there was a problem with the sale not going through. Eventually we purchased her and along with Eric's Watson Bloodstock have carried on breeding from her. We have a nice colt to sell by Captain Rio at the premier sale in January. Not only is it a half-brother to Mosse, it is a full blood brother to Il Quello Veloce and Donna Cattiva.
"Golden Sparkle is in foal to Captain Rio again to a nice early service as she didn't have a foal this year, but next year we may look at sending her back to O'Reilly. She had four foals to him and beside Mosse, Silver Sparkle has won five and is stakes-placed in Macau, and Tiffany Yellow has won three in Western Australia and is up to black type company. The fourth foal by O'Reilly, Gemma O'Reilly was trained locally and won a race before being sold to Australia.
"We sold the two-year-old filly by Captain Rio. She was a late foal and is being given the time to mature. The three-year-old was sold to Ben Foote in 2011 for $57,500 - named Captain Oblivious, he has been placed this season.
"It would be nice to get a filly as O'Reilly is doing a good job as a broodmare sire as well as the fantastic racehorses he is continuing to leave. We didn't consider Darci Brahma for this mare but may well send Nishaani there next year to get that same cross as Super Easy. She has a Snitzel (AUS) filly at foot and is in foal to Northern Meteor (AUS) but is coming back to New Zealand. She has a Captain Rio two-year old filly in work with Annabelle Johnson at the moment that will eventually go to Mike Moroney in Melbourne.
"Ironically" added Warwick, "Remise (Reset[AUS]-Arlanda), who won her second race the same day Mosse won the Concorde, was in the same draft as Mosse in 2009. She looks to be a very smart horse as well - that family always comes up with a good horse."
Remise who has had five starts for two wins and two seconds, and is trained by Annabelle Johnson who races the mare in partnership with her husband Peter.
