Jakkalberry will stand his second season at Novara Park
Wellington property investor and thoroughbred enthusiast Luigi Muollo has called on his Italian heritage in the establishment of his new breeding operation.
Muollo's Novara Park is the home of his globe-trotting Group One performer Jakkalberry, who will stand his second season at stud at the recently-acquired Cambridge property.
"Novara on the banks of Lake Maggiore is the province in northern Italy where Federico Tesio established his famous breeding operation," Muollo said.
Tesio is one of thoroughbred history's most influential figures as the breeder of, among others, the unbeaten Group One winners and stallions Nearco and Ribot.
Novara Park, formerly known as Shelby Park, will be managed by well-known horseman Ray Knight.
"His knowledge and years of experience in the industry will provide Novara Park the opportunity to build a great platform in all areas from stallion services to developing racehorses of the future," Muollo said.
A son of Storming Home, Jakkalberry raced in seven countries and won 12 races, including the Gr.1 Gran Premio di Milano in Italy, and showed his staying ability in this part of the world with his third placing in the Gr.1 Melbourne Cup.
Novara Park will also have a broodmare band of 20 with further support from Muollo's Sydney-based brother Tony.
Among the mares sent from Australia to visit Jakkalberry were close relatives of the Chris Waller-trained Group One performers Hawkspur and Pressday.
"He also served mares the quality of Lioness, the dam of Lion Tamer, and Refused To Dance, the dam of Efficient and Guillotine."
Muollo is also involved in another former Italian stallion – the Group One producer Per Incanto.
"I was fortunate enough to be offered shares in Per Incanto by Sam Williams, of Little Avondale Stud, and duly took up the opportunity," he said.
