BEL ESPRIT the sire of champion Australian racemare BLACK CAVIAR, along with SACRED FALLS recent winner of the $2 million ATC Doncaster Handicap in Sydney belong to the Bruce Lowe No.34 Family.

BEL ESPRIT traces back to one of Southland's oldest families involving veterinarian and studmaster Mr.A. Chisholm, of Glentriun Stud, Otautau, Western Southland.

For many years Alex Chisholm was the official veterinarian at the Trentham Yearling Sales, and when the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders' Association was formed in 1948 Alex Chisholm represented the Southland province.

The Kurdistan mare SUNNY GOLD won only one race, a dead-heat with Central Flight, in the Birchwood Novice Handicap (5 ½ furlongs) at the 1961 Wairio Jockey Club meeting.

The family received a big boost when North Island breeder Mr.J.A. Higgs purchased SUNNY GOLD, and bred GILTEREN, 5 wins, who became the dam of VIN D'AMOUR, 4 wins, Joint Head of the 1983-84 Australian 2-Year-Old Classification, Manawatu Sires Produce Stakes, Group 1, Matamata Breeders' Stakes, Group 2, and SECRET SEAL (Imperial Seal), 8 wins, Hawke's Bay Cup, Group 3.

At stud VIN D'AMOUR became the dam of MAHAASIN (Biscay), 5 wins, including the 1990 VATC Blue Diamond Stakes, Group 1 (2nd. Canny Lad, 3rd. Triscay).

SACRED FALLS (NZ), 7 wins, by O'Reilly – Iguazu's Girl (NZ), 2 wins, by Redoute's Choice – Iguazu (NZ), 12 wins, by Carolingian – Clermont Lass (NZ), unraced, by Centaine - Bourbon Lass (NZ), 13 wins, by Bourbon Prince – Kilt (NZ), 6 wins, by Faux Tirage - Haidie, (NZ), unraced, by Lo Zingaro – Senta (NZ), unraced, by Siegfried – Ballasalla (NZ), 1 win, by Woodend – Orderdown (NZ), 12 wins, by Glenculloch - Order (NZ), 3 wins.

HAIDIE, unraced, was bred by Mr. Chisholm, and was the dam of SALAAM (Super) 7 wins NZ, and 7 wins, USA, and AROSA (Super) who left SAN ARDO (Bellborough) 13 wins, Invercargill Gold Cup, Gore Cup, CJC Great Autumn Handicap.

Later HAIDIE was purchased by Mrs.T.C. Lowry, Okawa Stud, Hawke's Bay, who bred KILT (Faux Tirage), 5 wins, and AGENA (Agricola) 5 wins, VRC St Leger Stakes, 3rd. VRC Derby.

SUPER GRAND (Super – Haidie) was the dam of BEVLYN (Bellborough), 14 wins, STARTLER (Kurdistan), 8 wins, and BELL MAN (Bellborough) 7 wins.


LYNDA MARY (Bellborough – Flair Go, by Flair – Super Grand) 13 wins, Avondale Guineas, Dunedin Guineas, Invercargill Gold Cup, 2nd. CJC One Thousand Guineas.
