Juvenile filly Satono Glow (NZ) (Satono Aladdin) made it two wins from her first two starts with a powerful closing burst that took her to a comprehensive three-length victory in the Gr.3 TBV Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on Saturday.
The John O’Shea and Tom Charlton-prepared daughter of Rich Hill Stud based stallion Satono Aladdin had created a good impression when she triumphed over 1000m on debut at Warwick Farm earlier in the month.
Her mentors decided to lift their sights with the filly as she travelled to Victorian racing headquarters to tackle stakes company for the first time where she couldn’t have been more impressive as she simply burst away from her five rivals in the final 200m under guidance from rider Jamie Melham.
Melham had her away nicely from the barriers to sit third behind pacemakers Gin Twist (Home Affairs) and Jadzia (Ole Kirk) before angling into the clear to chase down the pair at the 300m.
Satono Glow quickly extended to the lead on the Heavy8 rated surface and put the result beyond doubt in a few strides before coasting home for a seemingly effortless victory.
Melham was suitably impressed with the performance from a filly she believes can get better over more ground in the future.
“I was confident but with fillies down the straight for the first time, you don’t want to leave it too late because they can promise the world and then get lost,” Melham said.
“Credit to the team educating this little filly. She was a bombproof ride today and I feel that the Sydney horses normally go well in the wet as they are used to being trained on the softer tracks up there.
“She loved the wet today and the way she got through it, this horse was a very easy ride in the end.
“Her attitude really impressed me. She’s a small horse to the eye but the feel she gave me, she felt like she had a really big stride underneath her and she settled like she will get further in time.
Stable representative Jade Lys indicated the filly could go on to feature during The Championships next month after returning to her home state of New South Wales.
“We couldn’t have been happier with her since her last start. She’s been doing everything so well,” she said
“She won in the soft last start so we were not worried about the rain today.
“We will see how she goes and comes through the run and get her back to Sydney and see how she goes from there (to The Championships).”
A $260,000 Book 1 purchase at the 2025 NZB Karaka Yearling Sale for O’Shea Charlton Racing and James Bester Bloodstock, from the Windsor Park Stud draft, Satono Glow is a half-sister to the Group Two placed Kitty Flash (NZ) (Ace High) being the third winner from Electrode (NZ) (Pins), a winning half-sister to Group Three winner So Wotif (NZ) (Iffraaj) and stakes-winner Bonniegirl (NZ) (Darci Brahma).
