We recently caught up with Rhys Mildon, Insurance Assistant at New Zealand Bloodstock, who works alongside Jane McAlpine supporting clients across the thoroughbred industry. With a background spanning studs, racing and veterinary practice, Rhys brings valuable insight to the role — and a genuine passion for the people and horses involved.
Explain your role and who you work for.
I work as the Insurance Assistant to Jane McAlpine at NZB. My role involves supporting all aspects of insurance services, including managing claims, handling policy renewals, and preparing and providing insurance quotes.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
I enjoy working with a wide range of clients from across New Zealand and internationally. It’s especially rewarding to reconnect with clients I’ve worked with in the past and build on those existing relationships.
What was your path into the industry?
I’ve always worked with horses, across a range of areas including studs, racing stables, and veterinary practice. Moving into this role allows me to combine the knowledge and experience I’ve gained in those sectors and apply it to the insurance side of the industry.
Who has been the biggest influence on your career?
Marcus Corban, who I worked under at Cambridge Stud, had a huge impact on my career. At 18, he set me on an international path that led to many incredible opportunities and experiences around the world.
What do you think is the biggest challenge facing the industry and how would you solve it?
I believe the biggest challenge facing the industry is declining participation—across racegoers, owners, breeders, and the workforce. Without people, the whole ecosystem struggles to sustain itself.
I don't have the answers but I do believe making the industry easier to enter and more rewarding to be a part of could help.
What advice would you give some wanting to enter the industry in any capacity
Make sure you maintain a good work-life balance. The industry can be demanding with long hours, so it’s important to look after your wellbeing to ensure longevity in your career.
Who is your favorite racehorse of all time and why?
Sunline, I grew up watching her dominate racing down under and her international performances were incredible to watch as a young racing enthusiast.
What are your interests outside of your role?
Running, cycling and taking my two black labs on adventures.
