Sunset Pass winning off the track

The partnership of Sunset Pass and international event rider and trainer Donna Edwards-Smith claimed the second annual Dunstan Ex-Factor Cup at the Equidays event held at Mystery Creek over the weekend.

The competition, organised by Beyond The Barriers' Gina Schick and Nicky Wallace, attracted a field of 45 ex-racehorses, all of which retired from racing within 12 months of the event.

Former Te Akau gelding Sunset Pass, a son of Yamanin Vital, won one of 25 races and also competed in hurdle and steeplechase events before joining the sporthorse ranks.

"I think he has a very bright future and I rate him as one of the nicest and most trainable horses that I've ever ridden," said Edwards-Smith.

"I'm very much a thoroughbred advocate. It's their quick footedness, their brain and attitude that make them great sporthorses." - NZ Racing Desk
