Susan Archer, NZTBA website editor, has won the 2002 Most Valuable Online Person Award at the Wilburtins Southern Hemisphere Internet Awards, announced in Sydney last night.
The awards, which recognise excellence achieved by thoroughbred industry websites and internet journalists, are organised by the leading US portal website LetItRide.com and its innovative chief executive, David Bernsen.
Thoroughbred News, the very popular New Zealand-owned racing news site, won the Best Entrepreneurial Site Award. Its director, NZTBA member Rob Burnet and Susan Archer were both in Sydney to accept their awards.
The NZTBA website, winner of the Best Organisation Site award last year, was a nominee in the equivalent category this year. The 2002 award went to Racing Victoria's comprehensive and attractive website edited by Greg Tobin.
NZTBA chief executive Michael Martin says "We are delighted to see Susan's internet work recognised by this prestigious award. Not only has she done an outstanding job on our website over the past five years, she has also promoted and encouraged the use of the internet and the development of websites by New Zealand studs, breeders, racing journalists and other industry organisations."
The Most Valuable Online Person award is made to "the person who has contributed an exceptional effort, commitment and/or vision to moving the Internet into the mainstream of thoroughbred business."
Michael Martin adds "We also warmly congratulate Rob Burnet on receiving the Best Entrepeneurial Site Award. Thoroughbred News provides a wonderful service for New Zealand thoroughbred racing and breeding and this award is richly deserved."
The Best Entrepreneurial Site is one that shows "an exceptional entrepreneurial spirit in their approach and expending the time and energy necesssary to produce a consistent effort over a period of time that continues to show progress."
It is notable that Julia Orlova and Pavel Orlov of Fora Systems, Auckand designed both the Thoroughbred News and NZTBA websites, which were the only New Zealand sites among the 21 nominees in seven categories.
An independent judging panel assessed more than 1400 southern hemisphere websites before each category was narrowed to three finalists.
The winners were chosen by a voting committee selected from a group of industry and internet experts with no affiliation with the nominees.
