The new Central region Councillor for the NZTBA Murray Brenton-Rule is looking forward to representing his region on the council and being involved with Council matters in the industry. "There is a fair bit going on just now in the racing and breeding industry, and I believe it is important to keep people involved and motivated. Nothing is easy in a world wide recession, but we have to ride the ups and downs. I enjoy being a part of this industry and I want to see it go forward," he enthused. ...

June 12, 2009Taranaki breeders rewarded with a Group One winner
Retired Taranaki dairy farmer Graeme Hill nervously watched last weekend's Group One Queensland Derby on television on the edge of his seat and didn't like the chances of the Viking Ruler colt he had bred during the early stages of the race. However, he was worried unnecessarily, as Court Ruler (ex Free Court), under the guidance of expat kiwi Larry Cassidy, cruised to the lead in the long Eagle Farm straight and went on to win by a long neck. "I was a little bit worried, I thought he had go...
June 10, 2009Mark Baker's appreciation of Vincent O'Brien
"He was a genius, an absolute genius" that was how Hallmark Stud's Mark Baker described Dr Vincent O'Brien when asked about his time working for the legendary trainer who passed away in Ireland earlier this week. 'The boss' as Baker respectfully refers to him was a genius and a master trainer, who made a big impact on the way Baker operates as a horseman. "He was a very private person, a family man, and a very tough taskmaster, but once he got to know you, he would open up and share his knowl...

The octogenarian owner and breeder of Harris Tweed Phil Bayly is no stranger to success, yet when interviewed about the Group Two winning deeds of his horse last weekend he humbly admits that winning is always enjoyable. According to Donna Logan watching Rockdale win is as thrilling as watching one of her own stable runners win. "It's like he is one of mine. It was a great thrill to see him win again. March 22, 2009Jungle Rocket epitomises the influence of Overseas Investment
Overseas investment in New Zealand Thoroughbreds is an essential part of the thoroughbred industry and it's not just about overseas buyers purchasing our weanlings, yearlings or racehorses, it spreads further into investment in breeding stock, racehorses, and in some cases stud farms, agistment properties and training facilities. Jungle Rocket (Jungle Pocket – Gu Li) the winner of the Group One New Zealand Bloodstock Insurance Oaks is a filly that epitomises some of that investment. Even tho...
March 17, 2009Windsor Park Juggernaut
The Windsor Park winning juggernaut swathed its way through the Autumn Carnival in Sydney and is continuing its dominance at the Queensland Winter Carnival. Hot on the heels of a trifecta of Windsor Park stallions in the Group Two Hollindale Stakes at the Gold Coast on the opening weekend of the carnival, came a first and third in the Group Three Chairman's Handicap when Ballack (Montjeu – Trephina), beat Rabbuka and Sir Slick (Volksraad-Miss Opera) at Eagle Farm last week. The NZTBA has called an industry forum of key industry providers in Auckland on Wednesday 11th March, to discuss the decline in the foal crop and the loss of owners and breeders to the thoroug...

March 6, 2009Accardo's Breeders achieve a Group 3 win despite the odds.....
The Group Three Darley Plate winner Accardo is one of those horses that you know has heaps of ability and gives all on a race day, but is almost a day to day proposition as a racehorse. "He's a tough horse and runs through the pain barrier, but he is fragile with only three good legs, and we can't put him under pressure, every win is a bonus," according to Russell Warwick the spokesman for Watson Bloodstock Limited who bred and own the horse. As a six year old this season Accardo has had fo...
