2015 NZTBA Stallion Register now available

This is the time of the year that all thoroughbred breeders look forward too, as it's when the NZTBA publish their stallion register.

Yes folks that's right, the 42nd volume of the Register of Thoroughbred Stallions of New Zealand is in the letter boxes of all financial members of the NZTBA.

The 160 page book features the tabulated pedigrees of 89 stallions standing at stud in New Zealand along with their race and stud records and the statistics of their sires. It is crammed full of statistical data and stud information, location maps, and beautiful equine colour photography by Trish Dunnel.

The book is highly sought after each year by breeders whether they are a commercial breeder or own just one mare, and provides vital information to guide breeders in the important investment decisions they must make each year to sustain New Zealand's successful thoroughbred breeding industry.

The comprehensive statistical data is crucial to the industry including sire premierships – both local and international, fertility figures, sales averages, Award winners, Free Handicaps, industry statistics and a host of other useful information. The pedigree index alone which covers 12 pages features an alphabetical index of all the horses in the first five removes of the pedigrees of the advertised stallions.

All stallions standing at stud in New Zealand are listed in alphabetical order, under the sire's name, their service fee, and in their regions.

A magnificent head shot of the late champion sire O'Reilly adorns the front cover and rather fittingly his well performed son Sacred Falls who will stand at Waikato Stud, is one of the nine first season sires featured in the register, an increase of one from last season. He is one of four of the new stallions standing this season that raced in New Zealand.

Sacred Falls (O'Reilly – Iguazu's Girl) was unbeaten in four starts in New Zealand as a two and three-year-old winning the Group One Two Thousand Guineas in 2012 before relocating to Sydney for the rest of his racing career. He retired having won nine races including the Group One Doncaster Handicap twice.

The Two Thousand Guineas winner of 2013 Altante (AUS)(Fastnet Rock[AUS]- Readyforcatherine[AUS]), who also competed in Australia as an autumn three-year-old and four-year-old will commence duties this year at Mapperley Stud. Pure Champion(IRE) (Footstepsinthesand [GB]- Castara Beach [IRE]) raced in New Zealand as a seven-year-old and won the Group One Windsor Park Plate and prior to that had performed at Group level in England, Ireland and Hong Kong.

His new home is Totara Park Stud in Whangarei, whereas the dual Group Three winner Little Wonder(Volksraad[IRE]-Shortblackmini), a three-quarter brother to the champion racehorse Sir Slick, will stand at Regal Fern Lodge in Eltham.

Charm Spirit (IRE) (Invincible Spirit[IRE]-L'Enjoleuse[IRE]) a three times Group One winner in England and France will stand at Windsor Park Stud, while Proisir (AUS) (Choisir[AUS]- Prophet Jewel[AUS]) and Ghibellines (AUS) (Sharmadal[USA]-Camarilla[AUS]) both Group winners in Australia, will stand at Rich Hill Stud Matamata and White Robe Lodge Wingatui respectively.

Zellis an unraced son of Sir Percy(GB) will stand at Lakeview in Waipukurau and Giant's Steps (ARG) will stand at Linwood Park Stud.

The register is available from the NZTBA at a cost of $150 + p.p. If you are considering buying one, it is part of the Association's current annual subscription fee of only $165.00. As well as the Stallion Register, members also receive a copy of the A-Z Members' Diary in late July, and race day swingers which provide free admission to most New Zealand racecourses.

The NZTBA is also actively involved in liaising with the Government on issues concerning equine health, biosecurity, ACC, plus employment and taxation matters. The Association works closely with, and has representation on, other industry bodies involved in the thoroughbred industry.
