News
Cape Cross once again showed what a loss he has been to the New Zealand stallion ranks in 2006-07. He finished fourth on the New Zealand general sires' list, with his progeny earning $1,496,136 and including 36 winners of 56 races. He had four stakeswinners in New Zealand, the most notable being dual G1 winner and NZ Horse of the Year SEACHANGE and the Ellerslie G1 winners MIKKI STREET and GAZE. His progeny also starred in Hong Kong, where ABLE ONE won the Champions Mile (G1-1600m) and the promising EVERBRIGHT won the Queen Mother Memorial Cup (HK3-2400m). His run continued in August and September 2007 when Seachange again won the Hawke's Bay Challenge Stakes (G1-1400m) and Stoney Bridge Stakes (G1-1600m), and CROSSING THE LINE became his first NZ-bred progeny to win a US black type race when winning the Del Mar Mile (G2 turf-1600m). Cape Cross' record was furthered in November 2007 when CAPECOVER won the Gold Club Trophy (G3-2500m) at Riccarton, WHO KNOWS dead-heated for first in the wfa Tauranga Stakes (G3-1600m) and PLEASANTSUNDAYGIRL won the Whitelion Cup (Listed-1400m) at Sandown, Melbourne.
History
The Darley-owned Cape Cross stood four seasons at Cambridge Stud from 2000 to 2003, producing 15 SW (including G1 winners SEACHANGE, KINDACROSS, ABLE ONE, GAZE and MIKKI STREET) from 311 live foals, the youngest of which are now three-year-olds. His fee was initially $15,000 but was reduced to $12,000 in 2002 and $10,000 a year later. After achieving stunning success with his first European crop, which included the magnificent OUIJA BOARD, Cape Cross did not shuttle in 2004, but returned south, in 2005 & this season, to Darley Australia where he stands at a fee of $A40,000. His 2007 fee at Kildangan Stud, Ireland is €50,000. Thanks largely to Ouija Board, now retired, Cape Cross was eighth on the 2006 European sires' list (England, Ireland, France, Italy & Germany). - November 2007
