Talented youngster to be set for NZ 2000 Guineas

The much touted Ugo Foscolo lived up to the hype surrounding him when making his debut at Rotorua today. The son of Zacinto demolished his rivals in the Rydges Hotel Rotorua 2YO Maiden over 1230m by an ever increasing three and quarter lengths.

A comprehensive winner of all three of his trials, Ugo Foscolo has been touted by his connections as a potential Group One horse with trainer Stephen Marsh seeing him as a budding star three-year-old next season.

"Class takes you a fair way, he's shown us a lot. His main aim will be the 2000 Guineas," said Marsh.

"We'll see how he pulls up but he might have one more run this prep in the stakes race at Te Rapa in early May."

Winning jockey Danielle Johnson was equally impressed with the gelding.

"He's got a lot of upside to him, he's going to be a class horse in the future, he is just going to keep getting better and better, he's a good horse," she said.

The Zacinto youngster was bought by renowned bloodstock agent Bruce Perry from the draft of breeder Inglewood Stud at the 2015 NZB Select Sale for $50,000 and races in the now famous colours of part-owner Lib Petagna. The trio of Marsh, Perry and Petagna hit headlines last weekend as the team behind ATC Australian Oaks winner Sofia Rosa.

The win of Ugo Foscolo has made for an impressive start to the stud career of Zacinto (Dansili), who also left Zavistic to run third in the other juvenile event held at Rotorua today. Zacinto also left the talented Zigwig to win her second trial by two lengths in Canterbury yesterday, her aim being the Listed CJC Champagne Stakes at Riccarton on May 7.

Zacinto has now had six progeny to the races with five of them placing, while he already has five individual trial winners to his name.
