Trelawney Stud proprietors Brent and Cherry Taylor were lucky enough to be in Sydney to witness their latest stakes winning graduate Spieth (Thorn Park[AUS]-Stella Livia[GB]) win the Listed City Tattersall's Lighting Stakes.
"It was very exciting, we were there watching as we happened to be in Sydney for a birthday party, and he was very impressive," recalled Cherry Taylor still delighted with the win days after the event.
"I didn't think he had a show when he missed the kick by two lengths, in a race over 1100 metres. He seemed to be in all sorts of traffic problems, then he seemed to just get a gap and get out. There was a lot of screaming going on and I copped some strange looks from those standing around us."
Spieth is a four-year-old entire by Thorn Park(AUS), the same sire as Trelawney's most recent champion graduate Ocean Park, and he was having his first start for the new season. As a three-year-old he won four races, including three on end at the end of last season, thus giving him a form line now of four wins on end.
He is trained at Warwick Farm by Bryce Heys, and according to Taylor he thinks there is plenty more to come from Spieth this Spring, including a possible trip to Melbourne where he was a winner in June, for the Darley Stakes. Heys also trains his three-year-old half-brother by Savabeel also a winner, which he rates very highly.
Spieth is the third foal of the English bred mare Stella Livia(GB), who was purchased from the United Kingdom by the Taylors on the recommendation of bloodstock agent Bruce Perry.
"Bruce was up there sourcing horses, and he sent back some videos and pedigree details of fillies for us to select from. We liked the look of her, the way she walked and her pedigree, it's a great family, and more importantly she was in our price range," she added.
Stella Livia is by the Machiavellian(USA) sire Titus Livius(FR), out of the Polish Precedent(USA) mare Sombreffe(GB), and is a half-sister to the 2003 German Horse of the Year and Champion Three-Year-Old Ransom O'War(Red Ransom [USA]), and his Group Three placed sister Madam Cerito.
Sombreffe in turn is a three-quarter sister to the Danzig (USA) stakes winners and successful sires Snaadee and Russian Bond. As well as being a half-sister to the Group Three Longchamp Prix de Conde winner and sire Cristofori (Fappiano[USA]). This is also the family of the Windsor Park Stud shuttle stallion Charm Spirit (IRE) (Invincible Spirit[IRE]- L'Enjoleuse[IRE]).
"Stella Livia came down to New Zealand and we put her in work with Robert Prescott and she won two races up to 1400 metres, but she didn't come up in her second preparation and it was approaching the stud season so we sent her to Australia where she was served by Haradasun(AUS) and produced a filly, before coming home in foal to Flying Spur(AUS).
"We sold the Flying Spur filly at Karaka for $400,000, she was named Thrill and is a race winner, Spieth was the next foal, and he was always a nice yearling, he fetched $200,000 at Karaka. Her next foal was the Savabeel that Bryce Heys has as well, and he paid $190,000 for that colt and thinks he is a genuine black type horse.
"We have kept the Ocean Park two-year-old colt, and we will race him, as his X-rays were not up to scratch, but I don't think the issues will stop him being a racehorse. At Karaka this summer we have a cracking Shamexpress colt to sell, and she has foaled again to that stallion," she added.
