Although beginning from barrier stall 13 in a sixteen horse field MISS THREE STARS was able to work over to be three back on the inside running early in the race for Samantha Wynne. This tactic saved valuable ground rounding the home turn, and was very instrumental in her win.

Although challenged strongly by Platinum Command in the closing stages MISS THREE STARS lifted short of the line for a short head victory.

Dublin born 27 year old woman jockey Samantha Wynne has been riding in New Zealand for four years with 173 wins to July 2016. Wynne has won 8 races on MISS THREE STARS. Her Winter Cup ride should be compulsory viewing at future Apprentice Jockey Schools.

The Southland Times, Monday 29th. January 1962: TIGHT FINISH - Short Sentence was always one of the leaders in the Barkly Novice Stakes and held off the favourite Yen by a neck in a tight finish between the pair. A few yards after passing the post SHORT SENTENCE faltered and her rider G.W. Mein dismounted at the end of a furlong. SHORT SENTENCE was found to have broken her off hind fetlock.

SHORT SENTECE was bred by Mr.A. (Alex) Chisholm, Senior, proprietor of the Glentruin Stud, Otautau, Southland, and was raced by . J.K. (Kevin) Holloway and K.J. (Kevin) Windle, both of Invercargill, and trained by H.M. (Blondie) Shannon, at Riverton. Thankfully SHORT SENTENCE was saved for stud duties, all of her six progency to race were all winners. GAY MASTER (Kurdistan) 13 wins, won 6 races in New Zealand for owner Mr.D. (Dal) Fea of Winton, and Wingatui trainer A.E. (Arthur) Didham, the last five wins on end. Arthur Didham campaigned GAY MASTER in Australia, and on returning home the horse entered the Melbourne stable of T. (Tommy) Hughes at which time Dal Fea sold a half share to a client of the Hughes stable. GAY MASTER won a further 7 races in Australia including the 1975 AJC Sydney Cup, Queensland RC Metropolitan Handicap, 2,400m. in race record time, J.H.S. Barnes Stakes, and Mornington Cup
