Here are answers to some of the questions you may have about our website:
Who is behind NZTBA Kewl?
NZTBA Kewl is the work of the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association, established in 1948 and a highly respected organisation within the thoroughbred industry. The website is owned, managed and edited by the NZTBA, and is designed by Fora Systems, Auckland.

Why has the NZTBA devoted a section of its website to children and teenagers?
Our purpose is to keep the rich culture of the horse, and specifically thoroughbred horse-racing and breeding, alive in New Zealand. It has been a vibrant and highly successful part of New Zealand’s economy and society for more than 150 years but will not flourish in the 21st century unless we share our love for, and knowledge of it, with succeeding generations.

How does NZTBA Kewl do this?
We aim to encourage children’s interest in thoroughbred horses and racing and breeding by providing information and stories to them for their enjoyment and education. We can also provide older children considering careers in the thoroughbred industry with information they can use to investigate those options.
The range of careers available in the thoroughbred industry is impressively wide, although the numbers of jobs in some sectors within New Zealand is limited:
-
farm and stable-based employment as stud & stable workers
-
jockeys
-
office administration with racing clubs,
studs, sales companies & industry bodies
-
racing media – press, radio, television, internet
-
bloodstock transport – by air, float companies
-
bloodstock insurance
-
sales – as a private agent or with sales companies
-
policing & control – stipendiary stewards, racecourse inspectors
-
TAB careers (the TAB is the industry’s betting agency)

Does NZTBA Kewl promote wagering (ie betting on horses) to children and young people?
We emphatically do not encourage children to participate in gambling, although the industry statistics and some project material for older children may refer to betting turnover which is a key source of the racing industry’s income; and careers within the TAB may be part of information supplied to older children about industry employment options.
