First Crop Sires 2004-05

NEW ZEALAND FIRST CROP SIRE WATCH,
2004-05
Following first crop sires is one of the most interesting aspects
of racing and breeding thoroughbreds.
Each year breeders hope that the latest "Class" might include
another Sir Tristram or Foxbridge, Pakistan II or Oncidium,
Centaine
or Volksraad, Tale of the Cat or Stravinsky.
The sires listed in the table below are the 25 stallions who
stood their first season in New Zealand in 2001 and whose
first New Zealand-conceived runners appeared on the track
in 2004-05.
Race and trial winners and stakes-placegetters were noted
until 5 April; from then until the end of the season only race
winners & stakes performers were listed. All trial and race
winners are underlined.

Champion
NZ Sire of 2yos and Champion NZ First Crop Sire is
single-season shuttler ALMUTAWAKEL
who got his first raceday winner when his son Wahid won brilliantly over 1000 metres at Trentham on 4 December. WAHID
then became the first Group winner by a current-season
freshman sire when he took out the Wakefield Challenge S. G2 at Trentham on 22 January.
His victory in the country's richest juvenile race, the $500,000 New Zealand Bloodstock Classique at
Te Rapa on 5 February clinched the 2yo Sires title for his sire.
The filly Alma June became Almutawkel's second
winner at Trentham in February; and Izzat became No. 3 when he won at Awapuni in May.
Interestingly, for seven of the past eight years NZ's leading 2yo sire (by progeny earnings) has not been owned in New Zealand.
