First Crop Sires 2003-04
NEW ZEALAND FIRST CROP SIRE WATCH, 2003-04
Following first crop sires is one of the most interesting aspects
of racing and breeding thoroughbreds.
Each year breeders hope that the latest "Class" might include
another Sir Tristram or Foxbridge, Pakistan II or Oncidium,
Centaine or Volksraad.

These are the 20 stallions who stood their first season in
New Zealand in 2000 and whose first New Zealand-conceived
runners appear on the track in 2003-04.
Until the end of March trial winners are noted; from April until
the end of the season only race winners & stakes performers
are listed - all trial and race winners are underlined.

Cape Cross has made a modest start to his SH career compared both with his companion shuttle at Cambridge Stud, Stravinsky, and the sensational performances of his own first crop NH runners, especially as three-year-olds in 2004. It will be fascinating to see how his first SH crop measures up in the coming season but owners and trainers with Cape Cross 3yos in their stable have every reason to be confident.  It should be noted that Cape Cross' next two NZ crops are substantially smaller than his first: he had eighty-five 2002 foals, and only 45 foals in 2003.

Shuttle

With a Group 2 winner already from his only NZ crop, Marju may well turn out, like that other single-season shuttle success, Soviet Star, (alliteration rules!) to be sadly missed in the southern hemisphere. And we can hardly be surprised: he's already a thoroughly proven sire with a lifetime record of better than 5% SW to foals, a figure most stallions never achieve.

PINS (AUS), 1996
Snippets-No Finer
(Kaoru Star)
Waikato Stud
Matamata
Garry & Mark Chittick
Ph: (64 7) 888 7717

Resident

Judging by the 66% increase in his fee for 2004, to $15,000, Waikato Stud is very confident that Pins will build on the good start his first runners have given him.  And six first-crop stakes performers, two of them in Australia, are undeniably a good basis for that confidence.
It may or may not be notable that his first SW and one of his SP progeny are out of mares by Centaine. Naturally enough, Pins served more mares by his recently deceased companion sire than by any other sire - and Centaine is already a valued broodmare sire in his own right.
Still, he has certainly helped to give Pins a good launch.
