First Crop Sires 2002-03
NEW ZEALAND FIRST CROP SIRE SUMMARY, 2002-03 Following first crop sires is one of the most interesting aspects of racing and breeding thoroughbreds and each year breeders hope that the latest "Class" might include another Sir Tristram or Foxbridge, Pakistan II or Oncidium, Centaine or Volksraad. These are the 16 stallions who stood their first season in New Zealand in 1999 and whose first New Zealand-conceived runners appeared on the track in 2002-03. In the main table below, final statistics for the 2002-03 season (courtesy of Arion Pedigrees) & comments are included in the first column; we've added details about the second crop; and updated stud fees & stud locations for 2003. Where available NH data is included for shuttle sires.

Stood at: Rich Hill Stud, Matamata, Waikato John Thompson Ph: (64 7) 888 3833 *Not shuttling to NZ in 2002 or 2003.
Summary: 13 ANZ starters for two winners in NZ: Clifton (2 wins) & Lord Asterix (one win); and stakes-placed Carlisle Bay. 48 of his 68 first crop NH foals started as 2yos in Europe last year for ten winners, 11 wins. To date in 2003 Bahhare has has four 2yo winners and 15 3yo winners up to 2400m, including the G2-winning filly Katdogawn.
The northern hemisphere performances of his 3yos give encouragement that Bahhare's progeny will make an impact in 2003-04 after a pleasing, if modest, start last season.

DANSKE (NZ), 1995 Danehill-Our Tristalight (Sir Tristram)
Windsor Park Stud, Cambridge Nelson Schick Ph: (64 7) 827 6656
Summary: Nineteen ANZ starters for five winners (4 in NZ, one in Aus) of five races, plus stakes-placegetters Quite Astute, Danette & Tadan at G1, G2 & LR level respectively. Danske was second leading first-crop sire in NZ with $70,795 in progeny earnings; and 14th on the combined ANZ first-crop sires list.
Although a 2yo stakeswinner would no doubt have been welcome from his first crop, Danske has made a very acceptable start to his stud career and Windsor Park has every right to feel confident about his prospects this season. It will be interesting to see how his progeny develop because there are strong factors for performance at a wide range of distances in Danske's pedigree, although he himself was best from 1200m to the 1600m of the NZ 2000 Guineas, and his female family is generally noted for its precocious brilliance. With that pedigree, large foal numbers and one of New Zealand's leading studs behind him, Danske has no excuses not to go on with the job in 2003-04.

Glenmorgan Farm, Tuakau, Auckland Brett Jenkins Ph: (64 9) 233 4771 *Shuttled from Japan 1999 & 2000; now owned in New Zealand & shuttles to England
Summary: Twenty ANZ starters for four winners (2 in Aus, one in NZ, one in Malaysia) of four races: Olivia de Belle, Bawl, Power of Gold & Jon Ron. His NH record from nine crops of racing age (to 2002) is: 386 foals, 339 starters, 215 winners, 29 SW.
Generous has made a hopeful start in Australasia with a good number of his first crop making it to the races at two and all four winners appearing in the final three months of the season. July winner Olivia de Belle (from the very good G1 winner Silver Chalice) went straight on to win again at her second start in Sydney on 4 August. It's an example Glenmorgan will be hoping plenty of other 3yos by Generous will follow this season, especially with the fair number of his progeny in the crucial Australian market. Interesting to see that he managed to increase his overall yearling sale average, despite a weak market at Karaka.

SOVIET STAR (USA), 1984 Nureyev-Veruschka (Venture)
Ra Ora Stud, Auckland now closed *Soviet Star stood one season in New Zealand after several years in Japan; now at Ballylinch Stud, Ireland
Summary: Ten starters in NZ, five in Australia, no winners in 2002-03. From 13 NH crops (to 1989-2001) he has 429 foals, 271 starters, 161 winners & 25 SW.
Soviet Star is in that unfortunate category of single-crop shuttle stallions who descend rapidly into commercial oblivion unless their progeny are so spectacular that they return at a later date - unlikely, given Soviet Star's age and the success of his first 2yos in Ireland (incl. 2f Caldy Dancer, G3-placed at The Curragh on 10/8) where he stands at 12,000 Euros. It would not be surprising to see several stakes performers eventually come up out of his 86-strong NZ crop and Ballylinch's John O'Connor is also confident of his prospects as a broodmare sire. His daughters have so far left 10 SW including G1 Soviet Song, by another single-season NZ shuttle, Marju.

TALE OF THE CAT (USA), 1994 Storm Cat-Yarn (Mr Prospector)
Stood at Windsor Park Stud, Cambridge, Waikato Nelson Schick Ph: (64 7) 827 6656 *Stood one season in New Zealand; now resides at Ashford Stud, Kentucky and Coolmore, Australia
Summary: Eighteen starters in NZ, 23 in Australia for 13 winners & 15 wins incl. 3 SW, SCAREDEE CAT (in Aus), UBIQUITOUS and HULACHINE (in NZ); a G1 placegetter Al Jameel & a G2 placegetter, Purrfection. Tale of The Cat was the leading first crop sire in New Zealand, 2002-03, with earnings of $154,775; & 4th on the equivalent ANZ list (behind General Nediym, Desert Prince & Red Ransom). From his 2000 US crop he has had 54 winners from 68 starters, incl. 6 SW; and has produced 2 SW from his second crop (to August 2003). TOTC finished the 2002 season in 4th place on the US First Crop Sires list with earnings of $US1,042,031 and 24 individual winners. He is currently second on the 2003 US 2yo Sires list with seven winners incl. the unbeaten G3 Be Gentle & SW Feline Story. Thanks to The Blood-Horse: www.bloodhorse.com for US figures.
Can TOTC manage the difficult trick of maintaining enough commercial momentum to fill his books and sell his yearlings with just one SH crop running for him over the next 3 years? The answer is simple: if he doesn't, Coolmore won't keep shuttling him. If he does, NZ breeders who can't afford to send mares across the Tasman will again have to watch Australian breeders reap the benefits of a stallion launched here. Although Tale of the Cat's first crop US progeny, led by G2 Inamorato, appear to be training on as 3yos, it is a very big ask for him to keep producing last season's spectacular results with the same group of 107 SH foals until 2006-07, when his second SH crop of 2yos will race. It's a consideration that should give pause to breeders thinking of using him this season.

TOWKAY (AUS), 1994 Last Tycoon-Princess Tracy (Ahonoora)
Little Avondale Stud, Masterton Wairarapa Sam or Buzz Williams Ph: (64 6) 377 5098
Summary: Eleven starters, three winners of four races in NZ: Starkay (2 wins), Classic Tycoon & SP Rapid Kay (one win each); and two starters in Australia for two winners: Pretentious & Warm Fuzzies.
Towkay was New Zealand's third leading first crop sire, 2002-03, with $31,500 in progeny earnings.
Towkay's first crop performance is notable because he had fewer than half the foal numbers of Tale of the Cat and Danske, stood at a very modest fee and is based well outside the major broodmare catchment area of the Auckland & Waikato regions. Whether he warrants a 50% increase on his first-season fee remains to be seen, but breeders can be encouraged by his debut crop's performance so far, and the success of his half-brother Danasinga (2003 fee: $15,000). Significantly, Towkay is one of only two horses on this list whose second-crop yearling average was better than their first-crop figure.
